On 14th January 1977, my parents were to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary but, that day, my father was taken ill and died on 20th January 1977. To help my mother during this time, we were invited to stay with friends, Doreen and George. So, in the Spring, when I had some annual leave, we accepted the offer. Doreen and George were working but we were told to make ourselves at home, which we did. One day, after we had made our bedroom tidy, my mother stood looking out of the window at the peaceful countryside. Suddenly, she felt as though she had shrunk becoming a small person who was very sad because she knew she had to leave her home and was remembering all the names of the fields etc. – one name I remember was ‘The Hollow’ where two fields met. When Doreen came home in the afternoon, my mother told her what had happened. Doreen told her that a very small lady had lived there previously and had had to leave her home. Her name was Mabel – the same name as my mother. She had since died and was buried in the local churchyard. Doreen said she often stood at that window especially, if she had problems, and she always felt peaceful there.

Later, we were taken to the churchyard and saw Mabel’s grave.
I know that little holiday and experience helped my mother and me and I thank Doreen and George for it.
