A monthly message from the President of Farnham Christian Spiritualist Church, Pam Knight.
I recently came across this story which I think has a message for us all. A loving son tried to help his elderly parents clear out ‘unnecessary junk’ before moving to a smaller house. He was frustrated by his parents’ attitude because all the worn out, useless things he tried to throw away, they said were precious and they couldn’t part with them. As the son was getting more and more annoyed, his father explained to him that all the things carried memories of close friends or important events and to throw them out would be like throwing away their very lives.
A spiritual parallel to our reluctance to clear clutter may be the inability to clear our hearts of the attitudes that weigh us down.
For many years, Saul of Tarsus clung to his ‘righteousness’ earned by obeying God’s law. His pedigree and his performance were prized possessions until his blinding moment of revelation on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-8). Then he let go of his cherished self-effort and later wrote, “But what things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ.” (Phil. 3:7). When the Holy Spirit urges us to release our grip on any attitude that keeps us from following Christ, we find true freedom in letting go.
