Whether you are Spiritualist, Christian Spiritualist , Protestant or Catholic, I believe we all accept that God or the Great Spirit teaches us to love ALL of creation. Most find this fairly easy when it comes to their dog, cat or budgie. Much harder when it comes to the sheep, cows and pigs whom they eat. They are able to de-personalise the souls whom God created and whom He, I believe, intended to live peaceful lives, fulfilling their destiny. There is no ‘Good Death’ for animals who end up as slabs of meat! Their end is always full of fear, dread, pain and violence.
Similarly, we all abhor the idea of vivisection - until one of us has cancer or an illness that will benefit from this darkest of sins. Experimentation on God’s creatures for our own benefit must surely be one of the most evil of crimes.
I feel we must all try and live a more non-violent, loving way of life. Certainly, as Spiritualists with our rock solid belief in the afterlife, love and compassion are powerful and readily available tools for us to use. Many people despise pigeons, rats, spiders and cockroaches. I have seen people who would consider themselves Spiritualists kill earwigs and ants. Why? If they truly believe in Spiritualism and life after death, how could they possibly think they will ‘get away’ with such cruelty?
I truly believe, as Children of God we must really ‘walk the walk’ and not just ‘talk the talk’. We could make a start by obeying the Sixth Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Kill and also by loving (all!) our neighbours, rats and all, as ourselves. Look on them all as Brothers and Sisters, as St Francis did!
With the help of Phyllis and Stella McCarthy and Linda Williamson, I have arranged a Charity Evening on 6th December to raise money for two small charities who rescue and help pigeons. It could be a start….
